SINHALA UNION

The Sinhala Union of MGHS has been actively involved in a process which consists of educational, social, financial and other project executions for the improvement of MGHS students.

 

OBJECTIVES

  • To create a MGHS students enriched in humanity and a perception of Sinhala Language and Literature
  • To improve students’ aesthetic potentials and guide them into the dramatic field.
  • Improving the Sinhala speaking skills.
  • Inducing the interest in Sinhala.
  • Improving the singing skills in Sinhala.
  • Guiding the students to participate in competitions.
  • Reducing the challenges faced by students about illiteracy in Sinhala.
MATHEMATICS UNION

The MGHS Mathematics union is involved in activities related to mathematics with special regards to the innovative aspects of the subject. It strictly believes in moving outside the norm and school curriculum to explore the creative.

 

OBJECTIVES

  • To become the best mathematics society in school level
  • Providing solutions to all problems while upholding the fame of the school
  • Improving the mathematical knowledge of students.
  • Developing knowledge about handling mathematical instruments.
  • Developing geometrical knowledge.
  • Inducing the interest in Math.
  • Training the students to face the daily challenges.
  • Developing the thinking skills of students.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION AND TECHNOLOGY UNION

OBJECTIVES

  • To promote and inspire innovative ideas within the students of school, transform them and to make them worth
  • Conducting the ICT forums usefully and efficiently.
  • Conducting competitions related to ICT
  • Releasing ICT magazines.
  • Doing practical for gr 6 – 8 students.

 ACTIVITIES

  • School level competitions were held in 2019.
  • Magazine was released in 2019.
  • Practicals have been done for gr 6 – 8 students.
  • Major historical achievements of the society include places won at the National Schools Software Competition.
TAMIL UNION

OBJECTIVES

  • To empower the students with resources to improve their debating abilities and leadership skills. And it creates a supportive environment inside the school for students to improve themselves with knowledge and debating skills.
  • To improve the dramatic skills among the students not only inside our Alma Mater but also among the other Schools too.
  • To improve the knowledge of Carnatic Music among students, and to motivate them to get involved in Carnatic Music.
  • Developing the opportunity to improve the basic language skill.
  • Implementing programmes to express the natural talents of students.
  • Helping the students to produce creative productions by improving their creativity.
  • Guiding the students to use the techniques in language with the trend nowadays.
  • Giving opportunity to express the multiple personalities of students through the language.
  • Help young MGHS students to build themselves with confidence, leadership qualities and mould their character and all-round personalities.

 ACTIVITIES

  • Debate teams were formed and class level debate competitions were held.
  • Handwritten magazines were released.
  • Question and answer sessions about Tamil language were held.
  • Cultivating the knowledge of Carnatic Music through organizing competitions and quizzes, and creating the interest towards Carnatic Music through organizing the annual olli Vizha.
SCIENCE UNION

OBJECTIVES:

  • Conducting Science quizzes among students to enhance their knowledge in Science
  • Creating awareness about Dengue and Corona diseases among students
  • Exhibiting the botanical names of plants
  • Carry out exhibitions in order to develop practical skills and creativity of students
  • Organizing Science day in school
ADVANCED LEVEL STUDENT UNION

OBJECTIVES

  • To promote the benefits of young people becoming part of the decision-making process that affects their school lives, and to provide individual students with support for voicing their views and opinions.
  • To develop the advanced level students unity and by giving chances and acceptance for their skills, improve their good characters such as leadership

 ACTIVITIES

  • Organizing and conducting annual advanced level get together every year.
  • Publishing book “Olziyai Nokki”
AESTHETIC UNION

The aesthetic union of MGHS has been one of the most active unions of MGHS since 1980. It is also one of the largest clubs in the school, with a member base of over 1000 students. This society has always supported in polishing the aesthetic talents of MGHS students. The main duty of those at the aesthetic union is to develop the students’ talents to an extent of being recognized by other people in the society. Also, the union works to pave a path for those talented students who wish to carry out their skills in the future.

 

Music is an art which has fascinated and inspired man since antiquity. The type of the society it dwells among varies from slums to divines. Since its initiation, our union has evolved to great lengths through incessant victories in various school level music competitions and many other achievements. Currently the aesthetic union acts not only as an organization which toils to uphold the school music industry but also as a coordinator among Sri Lankan schools to promote music as a subject through various workshops and competitions. The union has worked inside the school with a committed teacher in charge.

OBJECTIVES

  • To work for the betterment of the field of music within the school and beyond.
  • To work realizing the vision for a better taste of quality music among the student community and to give a chance for the students to bring out their true potential ensuring their future and of their Alma Mater.
  • To conquer the world of entertainment with innovations and experiments of tradition and modern dancing, to provide entertainment and a great relief for the minds of people.
  • Their mission is to experiment in the world of dancing to find new methods and improve the students’ skills with practicing of traditional and western dancing styles.
  • To enrich the students’ lives, enhance their school experiences and compliment school-based art education. The mission is to provide the members an opportunity to express individuality through the creation of artwork; these being created in unique ways for our community, school and self.

ACTIVITIES

  • Conducting individual & group activities for students.
  • Providing events by directing the students through dance & music subjects.
COMMERCE UNION

The commerce union of MGHS was established in the year 1990 with assistance from the commerce stream teachers and students.

 

OBJECTIVES

  • The main objective of the society is to enhance the knowledge of students in the field of commerce and introduce to them the practical aspects of the corporate world. Apart from these, the society functions
    • To provide a stronger knowledge on business and commerce within students.
    • To update the knowledge about current affairs of the corporate sector.
    • To make students aware of the opportunities available in the modern world.
    • To provide students with information to make them a better and brighter future.

ACTIVITIES

This society has been an active club and has made an initiative to bring up the knowledge of the students and guide them in the correct path in the field of commerce by helping them decide what they want to be in the future.

ENGLISH UNION

OBJECTIVES

  • To instill, uphold and enhance the English literary skills within the student population of MGHS and give the necessary skills and confidence needed to use English as an effective tool in conveying one’s ideas.
  • Make all the students speak English very bravely without any hesitation in front of the society.
  • Improve both written and spoken language skills among students.
  • By conducting English union in school, all the students will get the opportunity to show and develop their English skills mainly in spoken language. This activity helps the students to make them ready and participate in the upcoming English day competitions.
  • Improve the English language skills among students and encourage them to participate in all the extracurricular activities in this field every year.
  • To bring about a generation of intellects who use logic and argumentation to debate out and thereby address the controversial and major issues that face society in a civilized manner, as true ladies and to ensure that the unique ideas that encompass the individual is realized to its full potential by the ability to express it in a logical manner

HEALTH UNION

OBJECTIVES

February:-        Supervision of school premises and the actions related to them.

March:-            Collecting the information about the morning  foods of students and creating awareness among them.

May:-               Creating awareness about  body cleanliness of students.

June:-               Supervision of the canteen.

July :-              Awareness creation about dental cleanliness

September:-     Awareness creation about contagious diseases.

October:-         Awareness creation about contagious diseases.

November:-     Maintenance  of school cleanliness.

HINDU UNION

OBJECTIVES:

  • The main objective of the union is to create a community inside and outside the school with pure religious faith and knowledge. They want to create a community which follows the principles of Hinduism and protects its cultural significance.
  • The mission of Hindu Students’ Union is to motivate students in and out of school to lead a prestigious religious life through making them vigilant about the valuable traditional customs and morals.

ACTIVITIES

MGHS – an institution where students of all religions study in harmony. Today, the MGHS Hindu Union is engaged in a numerous number of projects. From all island competitions to small scale poojas, work is done without hesitation and teamwork embraced with cooperation.

Many annual projects were undertaken including the main event “Navarathri” festival which traditionally stages within the nine day festival. These are met to satisfaction through various projects and inner school and inter school competitions organized annually by the MGHS Hindu Union. Going by the motto “anbe shivam” which is a translation of a famous religious saying “Love is Shiva/God”, the union believes that Religion is a way of living.

HOME ECONOMICS UNION

Home Economics has a direct relevance to the present and future life of every young person. It is a subject through which students learn how to take care of themselves, others, their home, and their environment.

Home Economics combines aspects of Science, Nutrition, Consumer and Social Studies as well as practical Culinary and Textile Skills. Students learn about the inter-relationships between diet, health, family, home, and resource management.

Home Economics provides students with knowledge, understanding, skills, and attitudes necessary for managing their own lives, for further and higher education, and work (Food Industry, Clothing Textile and Craft Industries, Tourism, and Social and Health Services).

 

OBJECTIVES

  • To help students prepare themselves for home and family living
  • To provide certain experiences which are preparation for professional home economics employment
  • To improve family wellbeing by enabling families to be successful in their reciprocal relationships with the environments in which they function.
  • To improve the quality of everyday life for individuals, families and households, through promotion of science, in particular of home economics, education, research and communication, and through development and presentation of political statements in national and international context; work to advance protection of families; promote equal rights for men and women; support education of children, popular education and vocational training.

 ACTIVITIES

  • Dominating student personality.
  • Forum activities are carried out as a means of developing learning activities.
  • This forum works to introduce the lesson to the students.
  • Forums cultivate qualities such as creativity, broad thinking, insight, and the ability to act voluntarily.
  • Developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to live a healthy life.
  • Developing interpersonal relationships and building the self-confidence and greatness needed to successfully face life’s challenging opportunities.
STUDENT CHRISTIAN MOVEMENT

OBJECTIVES

  • The main objective of the Christian students union is to spread the word of God to all Christian students of the students and to uphold their faith in the religion.
  • To enable members to meet, work, pray & celebrate in the spirit of the Christian tradition.
  • Conducting Oli Vizha.
  • Planting flowering plants around the Chapel.
  • Organizing students for cleaning the Chapel regularly.
  • Conducting quizzes regarding Christianity and enhancing their knowledge.
  • Arranging excursions for the Christianity students.

ACTIVITIES

This carol service takes place in the month of December close to Christmas at the main hall in order to celebrate the birth of Christ. It is not only a religious event, but an event where the whole school gets together to celebrate Christmas. Traditionally, a guest preacher ends the service by blessing the teachers, students, parents and well-wishers

LIBRARY COMMITTEE

OBJECTIVES

  • To make MGHS Library the most recognized and leading library by informing and inspiring Sri Lanka and its communities, making us all more resilient, more knowledgeable, more connected and successful.

 ACTIVITIES

  • The Library committee of MGHS is a student body involved in the maintenance and development of the school library.
  • The focal point in the committee calendar is the Library Week, which is organized toward the end of the year. During the Library Week, Book Exhibitions, Educational Seminars, Film Shows and Talent Shows are held.

In addition, the students help the Librarians on the day -to-day tasks. These readers arrange the books in correct cupboards, assist the students, and prepare Catalog information.
