In the Northern part of the Jaffna Peninsula, just in front of the adorable sea, there is prestigious Methodist Girls’ High School Point Pedro, ever glowing with its quality educational service.
The school was founded by the Wesleyan missionary in 1823. The Founder was Rev Thomas Squance. He purchased a plot of land, situated on the coastal belt of Point Pedro – Kangesanthurai road from one Mr. Nagappar. There he built one classroom and a bungalow and started to function as a Tamil medium school.
In those days, the priests were the managers of the school. They appointed well educated English women as the principal of the school. For nearly 125 years English principals served and the school progressed well.
In 1950 they appointed Miss. Rosammah Mary Chinnaiah as the principal of the school. She was the first national principal. Her dedicated service continued for 16 years.
In 1960, when the government took over the schools nation-wide, this school also became a government school.
Though the school encountered many hardships and losses during the civil war and natural disasters it was able to overcome all those with the help of the government’s development project, wholehearted co-operation of the Old Girls’ Association and the committed service of the principals and teachers.
The school which was started with the blessing of God and dedicated service of the missionary, now progresses steadily onward upward towards the light.
